Three Simple Steps to backing up your photos

HP SimpleSave Photo is a simple (pardon the pun) to use photo and video backup tool that saves photos and videos to DVD. The application comes pre-installed on all five SimpleSave DVDs.

For those who have a cluttered computer, SimpleSave Photo (Windows only) is the ideal three step solution to saving your images. However, the application is more powerful when you choose what folders that you wish the software to look for your images. When you insert a SimpleSave Photo DVD, a countdown begins, letting you know you have 20 seconds until the software scans your hard drive looking for images.

After you select the locations you want SimpleSave Photo to search, you can further refine the search and specify the file type. SimpleSave Photo will automatically look for the widest range of file types unless you specify the type of files you want to archive on the DVD. For example, under the photos check box, you'll find a variety of file types, including popular file types such as GIF, JPEG, and BMPs, as well as more arcane file types, such as CEX, BMQ, and X3F. Now if you know that you didn't generate X3F files, you can deselect it.

HP SimpleSave is compatible with the following formats:

image files:
bay, bmq, cam, cex, cmp, cr2, crw, cs1, dcr, dng, j2c, j2k, j6i, jfi, jfif, jif, jp2, jpe, jpeg, jpg, jpx, k25, kdc, kqp, mdc, mrw, nef, orf, pef, pmp, raf, rdc, raw, srf, thm, x3f.

Video files
3g2, 3gp, 3gp2, 3gpp, amc, asf, asx, avi, cin, dv, dvr-ms, flc, ivf, m15, m1v, m2p, m2v, m4e, m4v, m75, mov, mp4, mpe, mpeg, mpg, mpm, mpv, mswmm, nsv, ogm, qt, qtl, qts, rm, rmvb, rp, rt, rts, rtsp, rv, sdv, smi, smil, sml, ssm, swf, vfw, wm, wmd, wmv, wmx, wvx, xmz.

After SimpleSave Photo locates the files, it summarizes the number of files found and the space required on the DVD. In the image below, SimpleSave Photo found 14.7GB of images, of which four SimpleSave DVDs are required to save the files to disc. You can then choose to view and change the images/videos if necessary, deleting those images that you don't wish to save to disc. SimpleSave opens a Windows Explorer-like window complete with thumbnail images. Deselect any images that you don't wish to save to DVD. After you`ve fine- tuned your selection, SimpleSave does the rest and burns the image and video files to disc. You can buy up to two packs to get a maximum backup of 20,000 images or 45GB.

The software is designed to complete the process in three steps, and it will do so, but it will grab every image file that it can find on your computer's hard disk, and a lot of those files are what are installed when you install applications or surf the web, and you don't need to backup those files. Then you can choose what files you wish to delete. But the simplest way to backup is to just stick the DVD in the drive and let the software countdown, follow the three simple rules and the software does the rest. It is a very nifty archiving and backup solution, and it is virtually idiot proof.
